About HygieneCheck
A fast, free way to look up the official food hygiene rating of any restaurant, takeaway, cafe, pub or food shop in the United Kingdom.
What HygieneCheck is
HygieneCheck.co.uk is an independent directory that makes the United Kingdom’s official food hygiene inspection results easy to search, read and compare. We cover food businesses in all four UK nations — England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland — with around 608,880 active food businesses across roughly 363 local authorities.
Every business, local authority area, postcode district, business type and rating has its own page, showing the official rating, the inspection date and how it compares with the local and national average. The aim is simple: give people a clear, honest answer to the question “is this place clean?” without the data being buried.
What we do with the data
- Show the official rating exactly as published by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) — we never invent or change a rating.
- Add context — area and business-type averages, rating distributions and nearby businesses — so a single number means something.
- Keep it current by refreshing from the FSA open data every day.
- Stay readable — clean, fast, mobile-first pages that work without JavaScript.
Where the data comes from
All ratings on HygieneCheck come from the Food Standards Agency’s Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the Food Hygiene Information Scheme (FHIS) in Scotland. The FSA publishes this information as free open data under the Open Government Licence. We do not collect ratings ourselves and we do not carry out inspections.
For the full detail, read our methodology and our data & licensing page.
Why you can trust the numbers
The ratings shown here are not opinions or user reviews — they are the result of inspections carried out by qualified environmental health officers employed by local councils, working to the FSA’s national standard. Our role is purely to present that public information accurately, with the inspection date always shown so you can judge how recent it is. We publish our methodology openly and link every figure back to its source so it can be checked.
